Paul Freidel | Spring on the Zumwalt Prairie
About this Artist
I am Paul Freidel, a photographer from Wallowa County, Oregon. My work strives to capture the essence of this remote, rural corner of Oregon. It highlights the natural light, the dynamic landscapes of mountains and prairies, the connection between people, animals, and land, and the area's rich, diverse rural heritage.
About this Work
The Zumwalt Prairie is North America’s largest remaining bunchgrass prairie, Measuring 330,000 acres, much of the land is used for agriculture, with some portions protected as the Zumwalt Prairie Preserve owned by The Nature Conservancy. Once the cherished homeland of the Joseph Band of the Nez Perce people, the Zumwalt Prairie now serves as a range for beef cattle and sheep. Despite centuries of human use, it continues to provide habitat for virtually all the plants and animals that have thrived here for millennia, preserving the cultural heritage of this land.
