Nigel is a Suquamish Tribal Member, husband, father of three, and grandfather of one. He takes so many pictures of his kids, that his friends say he puts the “Papa” in Paparazzi.

About this Work

qal̕qaləx̌ič is the Lushootseed word for Killer Whale, the name of the canoe I skipper. I’ve been going on Tribal Canoe Journeys for 35 years. I set out to photograph the canoes from different perspectives than what I usually see from my seat in the canoe's stern. I wanted to capture the character of our canoe: The bow from below, from the port side, the stern from above, the starboard side from a distance, the stern from below, and looking at the young paddlers from above.
