Kim Hawk | Lineage
About this Artist:
I am a tribal spouse and live with my husband in Suquamish, Washington. I first picked up a camera as part of a high school course. Since then, I have developed a passion for portraiture and telling meaningful stories. I continually look for ways to serve my community with my photography.
About this Work:
My project started with a gift. For Christmas I gifted my husband, who is a Suquamish Tribal Elder, a framed portrait of his grandfather, former Tribal Chairman Lawrence Webster. As he was holding it I was deeply moved and inspiration struck. The Suquamish tribe, as with all Indigenous communities, holds a deep reverence for their ancestors. My husband speaks his grandfather into existence every day. Even though I never knew Lawrence Webster in the flesh, his spirit is ever present in my life with his grandson. This series was inspired by their bond, and the deep pride that every Indigenous person takes in their Lineage.
